College/Major?

I am a rising senior at Dickinson College in the lovely town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. I’m majoring in International Business and Management and minoring in both French and Economics.

Where are you from?

I was raised in Oakland, California. It’s always so nice to come back to the Bay Area after a cold winter in Pennsylvania!

Describe yourself in four words:

Animated, Exuberant, Thoughtful, Adaptable

What new technology are you excited about?

I was just reading about this new device and app called Tile. Basically you put a “tile” in your purse, on your keys, anywhere and it has an app that tells you where this item is located. I’m losing my things all the time and totally want to look into getting a few tiles of my own!

What are you looking forward to most while interning at SJC?

I’m really looking forward to understanding the PR and marketing field more. What I like about the PR industry is its ability to create a brand’s story. It has always been an interest of mine, and being able to get the hands on experience is exciting.

What skills learned as a student apply to PR?

I think the skills I have learned in college can be applied to PR in both an academic and a social way.

Academically, you learn how to grab someone with your writing. That skill is very necessary in this industry. I was able to apply my writing skills in a social way by blogging about my experience abroad in Cameroon. This helped me understand what voice to use with certain topics, what the reading audience responds to, as well as what’s interesting to me personally but not to the broader readers. This helps with PR because it gives me a better sense of the voice that works and what does not work when trying to reach out and connect to a certain consumer base – essentially, how to stay engaging and relevant.

What kind of splash are you looking to make in the PR industry?

Hopefully as I gain more experience and knowledge in the PR world, I’ll be able to make a splash by re-invigorating the traditional press release pitch – really getting editors and reporters excited about my clients and what they have to offer. This industry is really cool because we are the people that shape and mold the story for our clients, so why not make it fun and fresh?

What has been the most exciting part of working in PR?

For me it is the immediate satisfaction of doing your work correctly. For example if you pitch a press release, the next day you can see the amount of hits for your client on Google news for said press release. It’s that personal gratification of knowing you did your job that is exciting and what keeps me interested in this field.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I absolutely love the outdoors. On weekends I take my dog on long hikes up in the Oakland hills, or go for a swim at Stinson Beach. I really enjoy photography and crafting – especially when I can combine the two! Another hobby of mine is to bake cupcakes with interesting flavor combos and to decorate them!

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about PR so far?

Hmm. As someone new to the industry, the most surprising thing to me has been the amount of awards out there that they have for everything! Like a “best antenna award”, who knew?!

Any fun summer plans, aside from interning at SJC?

Lucky me, I get to spend two weeks in Hawaii with my family. After that I hope to go to the Outside Lands Music Festival in August before I head back to school!
